I spent a fair old bit of time on this
one yesterday and have just come back
to it late - very late- in the day, as
I couldn't comprehend some of the clues.
This compiler uses a lot more double
entendres than other Times setters and,
subsequently, his xwords take about
twice as long! Could some kind soul
explain these, as I haven't fully
worked them out?
1AC:- "Door on stage previously the
way out" (ans. "Leg before wicket")
19AC:-"Affect to make trouble, after
seeing Russian coin on Scrabble board?"
(ans.- I hope! - "Play at")
Also, I feel the answer for 22 Down
doesn't sound right somehow. I can see
that a sow would be "in pig", but it
does sound rather leaden compared to a
dog which would be "in pup". I have
NEVER heard the expression "in pig"
used anywhere!

a wicket door
on stage - leg (stage/leg in sporting events)
previously - before
way (to get)out - Leg before wicket.

don't like this clue at all. other one was answered as something like, play a T(rouble). - i don't really get it.

19AC just clicked for me. if you were playing scrabble and the word 'Rouble' was on the board, you could add the letter T (play a T) to make Trouble.

Thanks a lot, Trevor. I see the gist of
everything you say, but, by golly, this
guy really stretches things to the limit!
Araucaria from the Guardian is my fave
compiler, and complicated as some of his
clues often are, at least you can see
them after you've solved them! Thanks
again.

I agree Rocketman, The LBW clue is a real stretch, however, the (T)rouble I thought was very clever though with 'Play a T' on scrabble.
You're spot on with 'In pig' to be similar to 'in pup' meaning of a sow that's pregnant, it does have an entry in the Chambers, I have the Chambers 11th Edition and it's near the bottom of p1173 under Pig 1.
I still haven't quite finished this grid myself yet, but hopefully by tomorrow it'll be done. Need some snooze time now, goodnight all
