I finished this without too much trouble last weekend, but before posting I would like to be sure that I have got 36 right. The clue is "John's underworld burdens" and I have LADES, which means "burdens", but I cannot see how the wordplay works. Could somebody please enlighten me? Thanks.

Thanks to everyone for the quick responses. Leon has nailed it and it's nice to have confirmation. Once I had enough missing letters to work out the theme and what had to be done, I didn't bother to find the last few as it was possible to fill the grid without doing so. Very lazy!
