58A - Plant former king ... Think the answer is GOLDENROD. Can anyone explain?

is that the full clue?
olden R could equate to former king, leaving the word god to explain.

Full clue is - Plant former king kept in best friend's retreat G_L_E_R_D

olden = former
king = r
best friend = dog
It's important to always give the full clue.

god = dog (in retreat - ie, backwards).

we're not trying to be difficult but in the past people have spent time trying to solve a clue only to find that they haven't been given the full thing.
i only guessed here because you also gave the answer.
