"COUNTRY OR KINGDOM RAISED WOMEN ON ISLAND"(6)- It must be Kuwait , but why ?

Is it a down clue? (Often useful to know)
Kingdom raised UK upwards, W for women, and AIT is a word for a small island. (lots of different spellings of this)

chrise - is that short for crisis(!) or merely chris E !? - you have come to my aid yet again,I shall have to appoint you official mentor. I know the word Eyot for small island (I had a chum who lived at Eyot House), but hadn't heard the word Ait, which presumably is a corruption of Eyot. Many thanks once again, Almo Stabaldi
