24Leading character acting in a main part (7)

Still stuck on this -- AMONGST or AGONIST?? In any case I have no idea why. Agonist seems better as, I think, it can be a leading part but I just can not see the cryptic part if it is. Any comments appreciated.

acting = on, a main part = a gist
