17dn a technical term for part of the heartbeat. Take the midle letter out of another word for agent to start with, then a word for "took" (illegally!)

hi Mondrian
Just arrived home. Yes, the dawn chorus here is mostly ring-necked parakeets (very noisy )and magpies. Plus this morning, an unpleasant discovery that either the fox or the Peregrine Falcon (nesting nearby) had plucked all the feathers from a pigeon. I filled a small bucket with all the feathers!.
For 7a I have a word rhyming with plight. There is a German one in the shipping forecast usually.

Yes magworth (post 27), but I saw 10ac as scarp (a steep slope or cliff) without the "P".

hi Wally
I found scar described as a precipitous rocky place or cliff in one of the online dictionaries.

It was the `permanent` bit that was the bother - a scar is usually permanent!
Is anyone else sad to hear that David Barby has died ? I read that he was just as nice off screen as on. M.

Not only do I come across words that I did not know before when I do this crossword. I also find new meanings of words I thought that I already new. Humpty Dumpty was right - when we use words they mean precisely what we want them to mean - neither more nor less.

Yes Magworth, I heard about David Barby's death a week or so ago. There was nothing false about his gorgeous smile. The sincerity showed in his twinkling eyes. I will miss him.
And now Andy Williams has gone :(
