Re: 44 across I have b-o-h-l and assume the answer is brothel (provided 33 down is cribbing). The clue is stews and soup served with meals, regularly.

Can someone please explain to me why brothel? I can see that stews and soup can be broth and the letters E and L appear regularly in the word meals but where does the brothel fit in?

It's in Chambers - stew(usually plural)a brothel.

i worked it out as broth (for soup and stews) and el for mEaLs regularly

Yes .... but then why is the clue "stews" plural and the answer singular. Likewise, if 23a is Tangier, surely the clue should be the comparative "more spicy", not "rather spicy"
