Presumably that's where the L in twinkle comes from....taking over El Salvador That's what I've put.

Now I've confused myself even more. It does say twinkie in dictionary....think it's twink because the 'American STARTS taking over', then el backwards gives twinkle then toes.

Thanks for that, Twinsnan, but I reckoned that 'starts [t]aking [o]ver [E]l [S]alvador' gives us the 'toes' on the end of the word.

I agree with Bill. For the same reason, I had arrived at TOES as the last four letters of the answer but the fact that TWINKLETOES is not in Chambers is not a good sign, even though it is a good fit in many ways.

note quiz setter says
"Incidentally, Chambers Dictionary (10th Edition) is our main, but not sole, source of reference for definitions."

Twinkletoes does appear in Chamber's 10th.

I'd got the TOES bit (from first letters), but still unhappy about the TWINKLE. The bimbo is TWINKIE. Very unlike Rainbow not to be spot on with a clue.

OK - must buy 10th edition. Mine is out of date. EVE is an actor.

Great to have the quiz again but finding it hard - about 70 so far. About 30 Twinkletoes does fulfil the first part of the question perfectly and the toes is the beginning of the last 4 words hence starts. Just going to look up actors as I was stuck on 18.

Of course Bill, now I see what you meant. Still very odd though about the fact that it should be twinkie. Oh well, plenty more to struggle with for the next few weeks.
