It's an unusual word, and one that I wouldn't normally use in a crossword, but it's there for a particular reason that might become apparent when the grid is completed.

If anyone's still out there can you explain why 'ecstatic solver embraced by sweethearts' is JOYOUS- YOU with JO and S around it- what are jo and s to do with sweethearts?
