Murex is the soure of "Tyrian purple", a very expensive dye, used at one time only for dyeing Caesar's togas.

I do love Araucaria's bank holiday puzzles but should I feel guilty about using Wikipedia etc? Could anyone manage this unaided? 1930s archbishops among many others.

I think you're right. He takes you on an educational treasure hunt. A lot of fun and huge smugness with the completed grid.
