Hi people, I confess I have cheated on 4 down, I tried dictionaries, etc and solvers on this site with no success. Can anyone tell me what it means?

2 refers to 2d which clue is Topless African securing watering hole for newt perhaps (9)

He was a very famous "castrato" singer - I think there was a film biography of him not long ago.
