Thank you to everyone for providing such a high standard of clues. Pondered long and hard but opted for aristophanes'
"A gannet, ten termites taking stage, shuffling off- to Buffalo? ", with its clever removal of "stage" and oblique definition.

As always when making judgements, nothing is totally black and white, apart from your prize...
