14d crepe. There were "bands" of mourning in Victorian era. First 6 months one wore crepe.

you're very informative jazzgirl, I thought of crepe, googled it and got a recipe for pancakes haha, then i was thinking suede, thank you, I'll go with crepe and know how that came about too

I keep looking at bend it, that's the only thinking it can be but 17 down clue is: Lo! read it exposed in every newspaper, i thought it was an anagram for editorial, do you think you could help with this then jazzgirl?
