Many of the numbers given for the length of the answers seem to be wrong - or is it the grid that is wrong?

I'm finding this v difficult today.
10 D. Member of old soldiers' club halts waveringly before control position, always (11) st?????????
8 D. Nerve one's shown in climbing races (5) le???
NB. The preamble gives instructions to add/take away letters, but I think these answers aren't affected right now.

Malone - re 10d. It's an anagram of 'halts' followed by a word meaning steering apparatus, followed by the poetic term for 'ever' This gives the 'doubled up' word to be entered. The definition is a German word (but in Chambers)

Can't help with 8d, I'm afraid. It's the only one I haven't got myself.

Anyone else find the answer to 12d a bit, well, odd, considering the clue? Assuming I'm right.

Hi again Malone. If you still need help with 8d, the definition is 'races' - but think of water wheels and the like rather than nations or Olympics.

In 8dn, the definition is races, but as far as I can see, in the sense of races of people. I don't see where water wheels come into it.

I think cmk meant mill races ( aren't they a bit like a water wheel?) ??

Good puzzle tho!
