Having a rethink on this clue:
4d Sound unit of Englism soldiers heading north TONEME or FONEME?? ( neme are the e men backwards)

Never seen phoneme spelled with an F. It's definitely a sound unit though.

It's got to be Toneme of course to fit in with the perimeter letters - why did I doubt myself?!

Yes, a toneme is a phoneme. Self-doubt, though often a regrettable thing, can be revelatory in positive ways, and really doesn't deserve all the bad press it gets.

Aristo, you might have the wrong label. That guy was a comic (playwright).
