One letter is preventing me having this finished by lunch-time.
41 A. Sun withered plant (5) ?eate
(I've double-checked my letters and they seem fine- would appreciate hearing if I've got something wrong.)

Exactly the same situation for me Malone. I'd seen reate but can't for the life of me see how the clue parsed.

Clue is 'Sun withered plant'(5) for which I too have ?EATE.

Re is an alternative for Ra, the Egyptian sun god. I've seen it used before to mean sun. Eat (as in destroy) can be synonymous with wither, so I suppose ate for withered. A bit tenuous though.

Thanks, everyone - 'reate' was something I'd considered, but I couldn't work it in fully with the clue.

Thanks Peter. A convincing explanation but tenuous as you say.

Re. 20ac. I've put 'Mister' but I don't think you could be wrong with 'Master' either.

Mister makes more sense to me, but either look plausible.

What do people make of 27ac? Looks like it should be lark, but I can't see why.

On second thoughts, 20ac must be master. That's the one that makes sense of the preamble.
