Defn is borer + extra.
You need a 4 letter word for gloomy then lose it's 1st letter which is g for good

Thanks, Tony - that was my strongest possibility, but I failed to see the reasoning for it! I'd managed the rest of the puzzle without doing the extra letters thing, so didn't know if that was needed here.
