I couldn't find the Italian soldiers as Dekkos, that's all. I am always willing to learn something new, but nothing turned up in google.

I take it all back. I misread it. dekko is nothing to do with italian soldiers.

According to the dictionaries, the word's origins are in Hindi, so it seems rather more likely that it comes from India and pre-dates the Italian campaigns of WW2.

If you put your clue into Google (but put Indian instead of Italian) you will see just how many times it has been used. About time, someone set some new crosswords methinks.

Thanks, jazzgirl.
Yes, the 'Indian' clue has been world-travelling since 2006 anyway.
This week it seems to have crashed in London though!
