Hi Sy
Have come across a ship which used to run the greaqt lakes routes in the 20s-30s
DALWARNIC of the Canada atlantic transit co.
Any ideas about the derivation of that name??
Parry Sound? Flin Flon?/
Kind Regards
The ravishing PENDA

To "The ravishing PENDA"

Are you sure you want to talk about some old freighter?
Nudge, nudge, wink, wink, say-no-more

Seriously though, I have no expertise in that area. This site probably has the best info:
http://www.greatlakesvesselhistory.com/histories-by-name/d/dalwarnic/

Was someone in your family associated with that ship? Check the post at the bottom re crew lists & further research.

A quick check at http://www.worldcat.org
doesn't show any archival material for that name or Canadian Harvester.
Print the following page & take it to your local library. They might be able to get more information:
http://www.worldcat.org/search?q=su%3ACanadian+Harvester+%28Ship%29&qt=hot_subject

You're probably familiar with the Gordon Lightfoot song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hgI8bta-7aw
It was risky business back then.

Bon chance.

This site has trouble parsing some links & they break.

Try this for the 2nd worldcat.org one:

Warnic is a family name. It could be that DAL is either the initials or nickname of an individual

Hi Syzygy
And thanks very much for your helpful post.
We found the video of the Edward Fitzgerald very moving and have registered with the forum at Boatnerd (Great Lakes shipping)
Yes indeed Mrs Pendas father was on the Lakes 1926-31 and visited many of the harbours.
He was ashore a bit at Parry Sound.
He was working as an engineroom man.
We have his photos showing various views esp a good one of the Dalwarnic in her younger days. Nothing like the old freighter!

Mrs Pendas brother followed during the 1970s to cross Canada on the Trans Canada Highway. He travelled from England to Montreal by ship - he was a Naval Architect. He got as far as Whitehorse but also visited Thunder Bay - and we have a postcard.

Mrs Penda and I are now experts on the Great Lakes!!!!

Kindest regards and thanks very much again.
Penda

I know it's one of the few things it's more fun to do by yourself, but if you want any help genealogy-wise, it's my passion and has been for 20 years.
