Chrise, you are right of course about that. But on the grid you end up with a 4 letter word on both the A and B grid don't you. you cannot answer either half of the clue without using both A and B grid answers can you. a simple mistake I suppose.

ChrisE,
that is what (i think) i have as an answer but it doesn't seem to fit the preamble.
it clues the same answer twice and stretches it over A and B?

I agree that it doesn't quite fit the preamble - however it is NOT the same answer in each grid.

it's got all 8 letters in the same order.

I think we are at cross (!) purposes here - one of the letters is different in the two grids.

the clue reads....

Appreciation of bowlerat the races (8).

(8) must be wrong because bothh grids only have 4 usable squares.

neither I down (A) nor 1 down (B) answer their half of the clue.

each half of the clue is only answered by reading A+B. once as an 8 letter word and once as two 4 letter words.

it seems undeniable that a mistake has been made. but as i said earlier it does not really spoil a jolly good puzzle.

not cross at all.just puzzled if i am missing something.
of course it is not the same answer in each grid.
g and w ?
A - has a clue that gives (4,4).
B - gives the same word as one word(8) but isn't defined?

i agree with all that this was a good puzzle.

happy Easter to all.
