Welcome to CLUE CHAIN - usually started each Monday around noon.

The idea is to start with a cryptic clue - set by me this week.

The first correct solver, judged by the setter, is then invited to offer their clue and so on.

The person who solves the first clue starts the next CLUE CHAIN - please confirm you will do this.

Once you have solved and then set a clue you cannot enter again, although you can still comment.

15 minutes time limit per clue and if not solved the setter must declare the clue 'open' and everybody can play again.

Game usually closes 18.00 GMT

This week's opening clue is:

True royal couple won't do this? (9)

Good afternoon, AB

My suggestion is 'altercate'

Thanks rambler. Much cleverer than my answer, but no, not correct.

I don't suppose it's 'alternate' (loyal/royal)?

No, "alter" is no part of the answer.

Afternoon AB and Rambler - having major problems with the site - I keep getting locked out - so I may striggle this afternoon. No nearer with ABs clue however - is "true" the definition?

Will have to go soon, the royal couple is United Kingdom monarchy and if they are "true" to each other they won't do this.

To prevent my fellow puzzlers' boredom setting in, the answer to "True royal couple won't do this" is Phil and ER- "philander".

Have to go- rambler would you please take over?
