1a: Engineer calls up about end of check (8). I've got the answer, which is an anagram (signalled by "engineer"), but I'm struggling to find a definition in the clue. Any fellow sufferers out there?

Think I'm in the same position as you - am sure my answer's correct, but there doesn't seem to be a definition in the clue.

I don't know why it's SKULLCAP either but then I can't understand 18 ac or 27 ac either,even though they seem to be right. I bet thus guy's banned from doing COUNTDOWN.

In 8a "clinches" are puns (according to Chambers) - the solution is an anagram of "OAP's romantic";
In 27a it's "aye" + n + "mor", all reversed.
I still don't see the definition in 1a, though.

Yes, that's what we all got earlier, I think - but I still don't see any word in the clue that defines 'skullcap'.
