Yes, Engels - EN are the opponents (in bridge,card games)+gels is sets.
Yes to Unite - unit+e(fifth letter in the alphabet)

In bridge East and West are partners, as are North and South. So East and North are opponents.

I know absolutely nothing about bridge, but know that Bradford's Crossword Solver gives NE as 'opponents'.
