How does Camera Obscura work, please? It's bugging me!

Er...

I wanted to know how the answer fitted the clue!

What's the clue?

Former 18 member, missing on distinctive quality in it, has died: namely the black hole? (6,7)

18 is Bullingdon - the Oxford luncheon club of which Cameron was a member. This gives CAMER, but the rest of the wordplay eludes me?

My interpretation would be.
Cameron minus on gives camer.
Distinctive quality is aura.
Within that is died which is obs (obituaries) and a colon (c)
