Happy RT Birthday Mr P and welcome Bees.
I thought the price increase was just a one-off to cover the cost of printing the David Hockney postcards (of which I am not a fan btw)
10A TV detective hasn't been around for a while, although there are repeats on some channels. (The popstar is around 70 yrs old!)
2D is a kind of rock
Hope this is some help.

Jazzgirl - thanks for the answer to 4D. Now for my list of other puzzlers

5 Down = Minor poet with whiskers (9)
13 Down - Handily placed to contain oxygen
17 down - Dodgy remedy for guitar ban
16 Across - Not opening with child on throne

Otherwise finished.

Happy anniversary Mr Pipesmoker. Like some of the others I too feel as though you have been around for ever. I am now trying to remember when I joined. Can it really be 3 or even 4 years ago? Where are you Caravaggio, hope you are well. Continuing good health to one and all.

Good morning Mondrian
I am not sure if you want answers or hints, so will give hints for now:
5 Down Another word for "whiskers" on a man.
13 Down - away from home.
17 down - Dodgy remedy or quack medicine
16 Across - on the throne
Hope this helps.
It is 5c degrees down here in the south east which is unusual for us. Brrrr.

Hello Everyone, all the very best for 2012 - and especially those undergoing medical treatment, or suffering from ill health - I hope this year proves to be a good one for you all.
thanks, Jazzgirl, for the help on those clues - I'd never have got 5d and 13d....
Regarding 16a not opening with a child on the throne
I've got:
-E-N-N-
all I can think of is reining - without the 'g' for being on the throne, but it doesn't make sense! Any additional clues welcome...
Also stuck on bottom r/h corner -
19d River below castle
-A-H-
20d Mock Somerset town...
-A-N-
Again, any additional clues would be appreciated.
I hadn't noticed the increase in price - it's essential buying, so no contest!!!
Regards to you all
Chris

Hi Chris
16a think of "with child" and deduct the r
19d the name of a river in literature.
(it is hidden across the clue)-E-H-

Check your spelling on 22A
20d A Somerset town without the last 3 letters.
-A-N-
Cheers.

I've said it before, but I do sometimes over-complicate things...
Have a good weekend, everyone
