Hello Winnie - yes I too thought that everyone must have finished as no action but of course some think it is too early for clues!!! Anyway I still need help with five, and would like to finish it before I go on holiday at end of next week. They are:

4. Breaking news about a game ending with the whistle (6) - is this an anagram of 'news' + ?????

11. Ferryman, after taking drug, collapsed into river (7)

14. Game head boy, sick at heart - and no turning back! (7) - is the 'game head boy' a RANGER ???

20. Polly, a beginner, is welcomed by the assembled friends (8) - is a beginner 'L'???

22. George joined the club of French banker (7)- was given a clue earlier about No.22, i.e. the club refers to a golf club(one used to play golf) but still can't work it out!

If anyone can give me some subtle clues I would be very grateful. Thanks.

Ferryman, after taking drug, collapsed into river (7)

The Ferryman is from Hades, the drug is ecstacy, the river is also in Hades.

Game head boy, sick at heart - and no turning back

The game (initials) has 15 a side, think first letter of one word and centre of the other with another reversed. The river is (famously) in Italy.

Hello, Hareemai - I hadn't noticed that you had asked again about the george one.
George could be "G"; + golf club + french for "of" . . .

Very many thanks to you all - ChrisE (again don't worry about the spelling of Haeremai!!!), AB & Winnie. Think I have them all now. If not correct, it doesn't really matter. Never got 100% yet apart from the 2010 Christmas Quiz which I found exceptionally easy!! At least the named charity will benefit. Now I can go on my holiday without having to think about the quiz. Thanks again.
