It used to be that employers, etc., gave out fruitcakes, and people indeed hung on to them; I'm sure we have one from 1973 in some cupboard or other.

Hi aristo, not heard about keeping fruitcakes generally but I have come across people keeping a tier from a wedding ckae to be used as a christening cake.

We only kept them because nobody liked them and it didn't seem right to throw out something so expensive (Yankee thrift?). We perhaps had the delusion that sometime in the future we'd slice them for roof repairs or something.

if you still have one from 1973 it could have evolved by now. Be careful how you approach it. it could be nasty not tasty

vague memories...of cakes being given to people at xmas.
