I LOVE Fowler, by the way; his lengthy entry for "inevitable" (for example) is hilarious. A smidgeon to whet the appetite: "Now it is, in fact, so often met with that one is compelled to infer the existence of a great deal more inevitability in 20th-c. art of all kinds than one at all suspected; so many things seem INEVITABLE to the reviewer in which the reader could contemplate extensive alterations without a pang." Priceless or what?
