I may have got caught out with the big house reference, believing it to be criminal as the big house is a term referring to the prison in criminal fraternities. On reflection yours PILE is probably nearer the mark, and I wasn't aware that that too could mean mansion house. So "hats off to Harrhy". Sorry if I mislead anybody.

I hadn't heard of big house as being a prison and so didn't make that link.
But I'll be ready next time!

Ive got lira for 12across and pile for 20d lira is old italian money so makes senseto me ,but I am puzzling over 24d ,geese flying east in film also 30a , message from former French president at last,I have t-r---.

For 24d) I have skein that's (e)for east inside skin.

For 30a) I have errand. This is found included in Mitterrand the former French president.

thanks Andy couldnt think of a french president!but I must have something wrong cos Ihave travelling for 23a,Im having a chew on with this bottom left corner.That would make 24d begin with e.

roo I've got transplant for 23a)plan swapped with the one (the) i in transit. So take "i" out and put "plant" in. Transplant is of course major surgery. Hope this helps.
