I found the solution online, in case you'd like to see it when you're done. When you see it highlighted it's somehow even more impressive. http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2004/10/-quot-chain-links-quot/3529/

Cheers aristo, but I won't be taking a look just yet, I have now finished the first 4 rows from top including 4 & 8 down amd I have 10 & 18 across.
I should get the 5th row with the letters I have in them but still toying with which links they are

I have all the 6 letter Links in now and finished the bottom right.
It mentions in the preamble that 20 Across (which I got early) is not a common word...like 12 Across is, that's a new one on me if I've got it right, I think I have though

Agreed- the former is less arcane than the latter, unless you're an Odin-worshipper.

Hi aristo,

I often travel to Asgard to check out the Norse Gods...NOT

I have cracked the Link but not got 16 Across yet.

I have sussed out the middle 3 letters, and the first linked 11 letter word starts with the 4th letter of the 'Link k' and finishes with the 4th letter of 'Link a'. (I had to look that word up too)
I think the 2nd 11 letter word starts with the 2nd letter of 'Link j' and moves down and then off to the left but can't see the order of the last 5 letters because of my missing 16 Across clue.

And the 12 circles with their orientation of letters move in a way which would resemble the action of the representation of the first 11 letter word I solved.

Please could you give me a little help with wrapping it up properly before I have to look at the solution.

Also, what has 'Link b' got to do with a fountain.

Cheers pal. Les40

aristo,

Sorry, I haven't got 17 Down yet either, seems to be 3 vessels that finish with those 2 letters and each could be attributed with a cryptic twist.

I'm snookered now!

Isn't it time for beddie-bye over there? First, for 17d vessel is the definition, and poor is a grade (as on a school report)...

For 16a, taught is the definition; word begins with E, then a word for passed embraces a two-letter word...

Link b is an Americanism. A fountain is a sort of soda bar, something you used to find in, say, any drugstore (chemist's), and a malt is a sort of milk shake- not something brewed.
