Why, please!

Being former reserve, keeping gun (9) E-I-T-N-C = EXISTENCE

Lift crane's jib up, carrying first small quantity (7) --S-F-L = FISTFUL

Waffles enough about providing accommodation for individual (7) O---E-- = ONESELF

In other words, a rogue - but not very moral (7) S-A-L-T = SCARLET? SHALLOT?

Any help, much appreciated!

Hi Janie.

EXISTENCE ('ex'/former + 'ice'/reserve + 'sten'/gun).

I'd guess the last one is SCARLET as an anagram of 'rogue' is the French word 'rouge' (= 'red').

Lift crane's jib up, carrying first small quantity.

first = ist, I guess that crane's jib must be luff F(ist)FUL backwards. not 100% sure

I found this - To luff means to move the jib of a crane vertically to lift a load.

Thanks, JimC and Trevor.

Didn't know 'ice' for reserve. Is it from 'on ice'?

Doh! Should've got the ONESELF one!

Don't think I'd have got the other two.

Thanks for your help!

I thought a reserved person might be said to be 'cold', 'frigid' or even 'icy', especially women for some reason (e.g. 'an ice queen').

But 'on ice' as a meaning for 'reserved' works well too!
