At lunch the other day, a Swedish friend said that she has been growing cabbages, but did not know how to pick them. Another friend suggested that she just cut them off with a sharp knife and I proffered "why don't you just pull them up?".
She looked at both of us quite bemused. Apparently she had said she did not know how to "pickle" them,

"I've been growing cabbages" is just a variation on the ole "knitting biscuits" thing that deep undercover agents like ColinE would say.
