Clue. Vegetable a go-go taking precedence (5,6)

Answer, I think, GREEN PEPPER

Logic

go = GREEN

go = PEP

taking precedence = PER?? Why??

Explanation???

It looks to me like that construct that has become common of using per, as in miles per hour, as being equivalent to a or an, as in miles an hour.

Hence you get "a" with "go-go" taking precedence as PER with GREEN PEP taking precedence.

Gotcha (as the Sun infamously said) so a, as in three times "a" day, is equivalent to three times "per" day.
