Any hints for
4a. Easy source of cash goes very little way when its first seized by dog (5,3).
and
23a Tree on desert in Yorkshire (8).
I have all the crossing letters and some theories but not convinced.

is it a word that can mean merit?
if so,i already dismissed that as an answer because i can't see how it could mean Desert.
