Thanks, dryden. That's saved me a lot of time doing something I would then just have to undo!

Please send help! I’m inding this a slog. I have Nancy solved clues but an empty grid. I have the across extras. My down extras suggest rough beast why no heart but if poet is Bates I can’t find poem. Am I barking up wrong tree?

You've got the wrong poet, he begins with Y.

Thanks. I’m guessing he’s that Irish chap then! But am I right on poem phrase?

There's a massive hint, on page two of this thread, to the poem.

Thanks. Got the poet and poem now but don’t think I can face the slog of grid filling and refilling!

Finally finished it! Many thanks to Cockie for some useful nudges. My last solve was 29a, and having carefully considered every 4 letter possibility in Bradfords for the answer, it suddenly dawned on me that the answer was the headword I was looking under!! A brilliant feat of construction, with so many thematic references, I can only say that I am in awe of Charybdis. The Listener this year just keeps on getting better and better.

How does changing r to l show the subject of line 2? I can't see any bird!
