Your 6d is correct..... one of the crossers most definitely has a G.

I've read all 92 posts and still I'm floundering, but the clues are very tightly constructed and so my vote for 32 (initially) is the adjectival form. Otherwise 'having a' would be redundant.

Now for my own problems, or at least those that can be decently discussed in this forum.

I don't have solutions for 29ac or 39dn. For 29, I've had a definition of painters in mind for some time, and it's the nautical one suggested previously, but surely 'chief' is a poor way of indicating the deduction of an initial letter? For 39, even after discounting 'attitudes' I'm getting nowhere.

If lilith are still following, I loved your story about 9dn! I had a similar problem with 40ac, which I was convinced had to be (C)HUMP. It isn't.

Finally, the Big One - I'll write separately about that.

Thanks. I am guessing 17 then. I think I am happy with the others. I had damn. Anagram (nuts) of “m and” meaning extremely. Justed checked Chambers and extremely only fits with damned plus m is not an abbreviation for minute. Should learn to refer to Chambers before bothering the forum.

Re 39 SNP is an example of a political ?????

And 9d - well, we can smile about it now but it was amazing how much chaos is caused at the time. Strange how we can get fixated on a wrong answer.

The Big One. Some discussion early on focused on the unches in the final grid, most of which contain the same letter as in the original fill. An earlier post suggested that 40ac had to be MINI for that reason, but it doesn't work. However, I have one of the other possibilities that does conform. So far, so good.

But there is one that doesn't follow that principle: 32ac. It was questioned here but the discussion petered out. I've no idea what I'm supposed to do.

Thank you lilith. Isn't it amazing how a blind spot can block one's perception of the obvious?
