And then seconds later I realised what 9dn must be. Typical!

This is not the first time I have pluralised the singular with an 'S' instead of checking Chambers - one day I'll learn!!. Thanks Crates, as I now know all the letters for the second instruction.

Thanks s_pugh, I would never have got the intoned sound bit - a new one on me.

All finished, but still have one niggle. It seems to me that 11D is missing an indicator (especially since the preamble states that the extra word must be removed before solving). Or am I misunderstanding the wordplay?

I can't solve 31a ,11d, 31d or parse 17a. And if you can help me further with the intoned sound, that would be a huge help.
Thanks.

31a for an example think of the women who burned their bras, and what their movement was generally known as.

11d a sort of grimace dropping last letter (trim) - whole thing N mist

31d is wordplay only (one of 2), and is the surname of one of the protagonists central to the theme. In this country I guess the surname would normally appear with the first letter repeated twice.

17a me neither and I gave up trying!

The intoned sound is the one that is used by Hindu devotees - Google will throw it up if you put in the 3 appropriate words.

Hi Samovar, I'm more or less in exactly the same position as you. 31a has to be LIB, but if it is, I'm not able to conclusively convince myself. 11d bugs me, because nothing indicates its a backward inclusion. I'm with you on the other two, and I still can't get 25a. Additionally, there seems to be an extra letter of 16a that doesn't fit in the phrase. 31d has to be an anag. of encyclopedia with piece and a+no removed, but it doesn't make a word or an acronym!!!

31d think anagram missing piece, c (about), a & n(umber) - results in a surname albeit an unusual one (see previous)

31a is an omitted letter clue.
11d is not a backward inclusion.
17a Compare TOO with the answer
