Meursault you are correct. I meant table top.
We did, in fact, have a small table footie as well.
I don't remember Fred Truman. It was not really my sort of thing. I just happened to have sons!

'The Indoor League' it was called, and ran for a few years in the mid-70s. It was something for Fred to do in his retirement. Program creator was Sid Waddell, I think. I only mentioned it because I know that table football was featured...

I am stuck on 36 Across in spite of Bananabean's help. Am also having trouble with 1 and 13 Down. Any help most gratefully received.
My Chambers is rather old, I think I'd better get a new one !

36 - extra word is 'saw'. Anagram vote, Di and add ex to the end. It's the old system used to display teletext.
1D is one of the 2 clues which is wordplay only. Word for admirable fellow followed by N, EY
13D is variation of normal word for offspring. Extra word is 'enticing', dress is used here in the context of give a dressing down. Synonym for that around L.

I am truly struggling with this, with the following problems

1. 24d - how does coins work as the extra word?
2. Cannot get first instruction
3. Need help with 25a - how many clashes has it got?
4. I cannot parse 15,17,18 across
5. I cannot solve 31a or 19,26 and 31d, and I am assuming 2 of these at least have 2 missing letters in the wordplay.

Other than that, this has to be the most difficult solve this year and proven to be (so far for me) an insurmountable challenge - but I haven't given up yet!

Not on your own Gitto - this is a hideous one! I have a full grid apart from 8dn which has me stumped - I thought it must be snipe but can't parse it at all, and also figure that it must end in KE or else the comment about the letter K in the preamble makes no sense at all.

24dn - coins is extra, think Israeli coins - symbols for silver & gold & both losing head and tail.

25ac - I have 3.

15ac - extra O then intoned sound.

18ac - word for order dropping individual and substituting teachings.

A hint with 8dn would be much appreciated!

Gitto - 24D - Plural ends in OT (both without head or tail) so coins superfluous
