Hi Wendy, I agree, why start a new thread when this one could run forever! Have you noticed a recent and very annoying trend where people start a sentence with the word So for no particular reason? I also wonder if there's a cunning plan to change the word create to crate. I keep hearing otherwise eloquent speakers going on about crating this and crating that and I want to bop them. Not exactly apostrophe-related I s'pose but our ears need protection as well as our eyes, eh? Bye for now

Another niggle is news reporters on tv who start their report with Well. They may be reporting on a drought, so hardly the most appropriate choice of word.

Yet another, is people who add r to words like saw. I sawr it. Saw is a three letter word, and should not have anything added.

Did I get out of the wrong side of the bed this morning?

Found an article in the BBC News Magazine online on 13th July just after I'd read post 121 by HelenB. It was entitled 'Viewpoint:why do some Americanisms irritate people?'

Just read today's page and there have been 799 comments added so far. There is a list of the 50 most noted examples, some I admit to agreeing with.

I'd like to know why so many people pronounce liquorice as liquorish.

Another which rankles is people who pronounce DUEL as JEWEL.

Moan, moan, whinge whinge...

...and another thing...Why do so many announcers and comperes say "Next up"? ...and why do they ask us to put our hands together for what's coming next. Do they want us to clap very quietly? Oh dear, I think I need a lie down in a darkened room.

Talking of clapping, I really, really hate the phrase "give it up for". It's not Lent is it?
