But who is it who makes up the vulgar rabble and should be driven away.

Beta double minus dear boy. 'Profanum' means 'outside the sacred circle', much more accurate in the context of this thread don't you think?

Mr Chips,
If you are right that means game, set and match to Neil. But I thought the phrase meant " I hate the vulgar rabble and drive them away".

Profanum vulgus means uninitiated rabble. Pro fanum literally means before, ie outside, the temple.

Mr Chips,

I'm not questioning your knowledge of latin (mine is absolute zero) and anyway I've seen your film and you're a good egg.
But a quick search on the interwobblething says "I hate the vulgar rabble..........". I presumed that means vulgar as defined in today's language. Is that wrong then.

'Vulgar rabble' doesn't translate profanum, only vulgus, so in that sense it's an incomplete rendering of the original Latin.

I used to get paid for this you know!

Probably missing something really obvious, but I can't get 11a. I've got all the intersecting letters, and even the shaded letter from the 'Wordfinder' but still can't see it.
