All correct Rickye. Now start at the square to the left of 14 and think of a British scientist who died earlier this year.

Brilliant Smartie! Many thanks. I don’t think I would have got on the right track without your assistance though the non symmetrical placing of clashes should have got me thinking more deeply.

I've completed the grid, found the boundary etc.

I am puzzled, though, by the word play for 36 across. I assumed the misprint was in the 1st word. but still cannot parse the clue. Help please!

Hi Cass. Yes, Shirt is the definition. Wordplay is 'truck' for traffic, without c(ollege), reversed (round), followed by a(rea).

You're welcome, Cass, and thanks for your kind comment. I think most contributors here would agree, it is rewarding, for example, to see that some of the same people who were asking questions a few years ago are now able to help newer people.

Kirky, what do you mean when you write 5,7 and 7,9. Two words of those lengths, or co-ordinates, or...?

For 6d is the answer 'Rayne'? An old English word for Reign perhaps. I know it's an anagram of N + Year but I have RA for the first 2 letters and can't find anything in the online dictionary or anagram solvers.
