Hi

If I follow the first instruction it seems gobbledygook what am I doing wrong?

Novice - the phrase you've obtained invites you to look at the clues in a fresh light. Use the same method as you did when you were discovering that instruction!

To answer another query, 'Arty grottoes' has been chosen because of something more than just the poetic nature of ANTRES.

Hi ionacarr - does this mean you've jumped the final hurdle? If so, a hint would be nice.

It's so pretty that each of the possible ways of following that instruction to look at the clues in a different light gives you something -- not always useful!

I'm afraid I've jumped all the hurdles apart from the last, i.e. finding the four-letter word (which ought to be different from the one I've been using since I started hunting). I'm not entirely sure what the 'search area' is either, despite having the name of a small town and memories of the publicity the theme received in 1979.

I should have added that I'd be happy to help with the parsing of any clues that people are mystified by. That aspect of the puzzle was a continual source of frustration for me, but I got them all eventually and can understand why they are as they are.
