Hello, Elle!
There are no F numbers on my keyboard.
(Or a Caps Lock or Delete buttons)
TV screens do not go dark in late evening, so why should your computer?
Makes no sense to me.
I am all parsed now, but 9a took me an age to do.
I eventually found a dictionary that had it though.
So no puzzles now until Monday!

Hi, Rusty!
I still have the odd one I am playing around with from time to time.......
But 7d has me beat........I think I must be completely on the wrong track?
My clue reads:
Base for car makers - but not for mathematician (5)
I am thinking it is "Turin" = "base for car makers" (def)
But the only way I can tie in "mathematician" is through Alan Turing?
Should the clue perhaps read "but not good for mathematician" - so that a "g" could be removed?
But then this cannot be the case or everyone would have been objecting and querying this!
No one but me seems to have a problem with it!
So where am I going wrong , please?
(Am I going to need to kick myself?)

Hello, Elle!
I agree it is Turin/g.
The setter is using "base" to indicate the last letter in Turing.
That is how I see it.
I know Fiat used to build cars in Turin but not sure if that is still the case.
Misses O and LB were out for tea with their Dad earlier!

Hi, Rusty!
Thank you for confirming that!
I had thought that "base" was part of the definition?
Ooops! ...My screen is beginning to darken!
Zero hour - which appears for some reason to be 10 pm - is here......
I shall soon get little messages telling me how many hours it is before I shall wake up at (for some reason) 7.30 am!!
Maybe this is what it feels like to be taken over by aliens.....?
Misses O and L-B are doing well for eating out today!

Good morning, Elle!
It is a lovely morning here, with a touch of frost.
I was out for a walk earlier.
How are you and your computer getting on today?

A Very good morning to you, Rusty!
It is a beautiful day here........cold (frosty earlier) but with blue sky and sunshine!
A great day for walking!
How far afield did you go ?
The computer is fine during daytime hours........
But I don't think the screen darkened quite as much last night......unless maybe I am already adjusting to it?
It was usable, but a bit of an eyestrain.
Daughter sent some info.......but nothing I had not already tried!
I guess "if push comes to shove", I can live with it for an hour or at the end of the day!
Now...the Everyman..... and a coffee!

Elle,
There is a small snippet about screen brightness at bottom of Tech page in ST magazine. Maybe helpful.

Hello, Elle!
I think you should rename your computer, "Dracula", as it doesn't like the light!
Maybe Kenyatta's tip will bear fruit.
Let us hope so!
I only walked for about half an hour.
And I had gloves on! Quite chilly out!
I see there is a programme on television this evening about the shenanigans that British Cycling and Team Sky get up to.
I know Emma Pooley is taking part, and I rate Emma highly in the integrity stakes.
She is reigning World Champion in long distance duathlon.
I have set my machine to record it.

Hi, Rusty!
Yes, cold and crisp here, too!
I think we are set to hit a maximum temperature of 5C this afternoon - that will certainly be an improvement on earlier!
We are away out walking with the dog.....
I am planning on wearing padded coat, scarf and gloves!
And my nubucks!
The Everyman was a good one today....... nicely done......but not difficult.
Back in a bit........
