I am surprised that you had to STOP by the side of the road to change the gearbox, though.

I had no option but to stop as no gearbox- car could not move.
Unfortunately it was raining very heavily at the time,but always having the portable gazebo in the boot I managed this simple (to me) job without getting wet.
I hope this puts your mind at rest.

A propos gearboxes:In the fifties I was driving an Austin in Bradford when my gearbox failed. The only gear I could engage was reverse, and hat to drive abt. 3 miles in that gear to get home. It was night time and no garages open .
