I've solved everything except 44A. I fear it's super simple but I just can't see it. I know the corrected letter but not where to put it. I know the 4 crossing grid entries and how this one must be "treated".

Hints appreciated.

Ah of course! Thanks H1982. Was including up in the anagram and trying to change cop with the new letter.

All done but for the highlighting - I cannot spot what is needed. Is that obvious to everyone else?

I have the only possible answer at 16a but not sure how it works. No matter!

Hi Topaz,

16a - the unadjusted answer is 4 letter "squad" inside 6 letter "range" minus the last two letters/'but not gunners'.

I'm having trouble equating a follower of Wycliffe with Private Walker. Can anyone explain?

Look up both the 2nd definition of the answer and the 2nd definition of the "Wycliffe follower" in Chambers

Topaz - I guess you see it or you don't. You should have a title 'X in the Y' and you're looking for a word meaning X in an example of Y.

I looked in the most obvious place and it was there

All done. Great puzzle. My only concern is what the “on” is doing in 10d, “mounted fighters , better on roans jeered”. If we correct “better”, does the (treated) clue not work fine without the “on”?
