Thank you again Malone. As usual I was not seeing the wood for the trees. I assume that 's is the letter referred to in the preamble and is to be omitted from what is written below the grid.

i have looked at opening letters of the "extra letter clues" ; opening letters of the "missing letter clues" and opening letters of the thematic clues but still nothing....

dont give up yet - you are almost there, Try googling famous hoaxes as always puzzled did. That will give you 2 of the 3. I got the 13d one from the remaining letters of Sheer Finesse...

Or you could get it from the definition in 1a, as each thematic clue (l ast word or 2) defines one of the other entries
