In my view the first line of the preamble should simply have said “Some cells contain more than one letter, ...” I have no idea why it specified two.

Hi keepatit & jigjag, gross apologies re the number of letters in a cell. I didn't have the puzzle in front of me when I posted (that'll teach me!) and I was wrongly recalling another puzzle I completed over the weekend.

I agree with your logic. It is a mistake. I think the reason for the mistake is that the pre-amble is very long, and in attempting to reduce it to the maximum amount of words allowed, the setter accidentally cut out "or more", and the Editor did not notice. There was also no room to say that Chambers (2016) was recommended.

We know that there is a maximum number of words because the setter Chalicea told us that in a thread a few weeks ago.

no problem - thought you were posting from memory - I have made the same mistake

Thanks for asking , jigjag.
I was busy yesterday.
I am finally picking it up.

I was familiar with US version. And hence my confusion.
I just looked at the UK version and everything fell into place.
Now I know why 2d and 28a have single letters.

The only answer I am missing is 4a. I have SOL.
Also 7a is a 4 letter answer starting with C.

The only problem is finding enough color pencils.
Crayons might work.

One definition of Sol fits the clue exactly - Alchemist's gold in suspension.

PS Glad you got the single letters - I tried to steer you towards them!

7A. Let him take a cloak (4)
The first three letters can mean 'let him or her) take' + A in the clue. The four letter word is a cloak.

Glad you finished it. You are right about the colours. I havent got maroon, orange or light blue, and dont fancy a special shopping trip.

Might try a mixture of colours but have not done art since school

Thank you malone and jigjag.
As soon as I saw the UK version everything was clear.

BTW, the colors are the same in both versions.
I just found a set of crayons.

Nice puzzle.
