Despite the doubtless super tips given so far, my brain is still fogged as to how to crack the cipher ! If the central word is for example LIFT, then how do the digits 2960 indicate this ? Any further nudge as to how to discover this (for me elusive) cipher would be greatly appreciated !!

i'm in the same position, primeprospect. I can guess some of the words on grid B, but even then I can't seem to crack the cipher. Thank you for every hint given on this forum but this is one last effort before I move on to this week's Listener.

Write out the alphabet and then, underneath, write the numbers 1 to 9 plus 0, and repeat. See if anything emerges.

Brilliant! Thank you so much primeprospect. To have all the words and not be able to work out the cipher was vey frustrating. Now I can rest, but I will never be able to afford the top line.
