I think I'm right but

I don't think your theory is correct as by that token the 4th letter of 21c would have to be J and there is not a J in 22dn.

I am struggling to fit 34 across in with this system.

You need to read the preamble. There are letters that need to be changed in the diagonal to have the correct description of the theme word. That is one of them and similarly 24d and 34a.

The method of entry described earlier is correct

I haven't cold-solved 34ac yet - but equally I can't find anything that would fit if the system was as mentioned. Maybe they are just total jumblies?

The j in both these cases is changed to the next letter in the theme word which you need to work out

Stick with it- it's only those 2 that seem odd.

All the others are entered as discussed with no clash

I have a feeling that I won't be finishing this one! Still, the spare bedroom has been waiting for a lick of paint all summer, so thanks to Sabre for creating the opportunity. I managed Jigger yesterday in my customary 30 minute preview. I sensed trouble! Jolly well down to anybody who even gets close!
