ethereal

23ac is not one of the themed answers - it is defined.

20ac professIONAl - should give you a nudge (with 22d which is one of the themed answers.) First word of 5d is 'the'.

ethereal ... 23 is in the Caribbean but is not part of the theme (it is defined: island). The theme in 20 is in letters 6-9.

If I say that the '5d' in '20a' is at positions.

8,9,10,11

That may help you.

Now it makes sense. Before even the disclosure was cryptic.

The letters are correct. It's an anagram inside a word for 'dirty stuff'.
It's one of the themed clues

Many thanks mattrom.
I'm afraid I went to bed before seeing your response.

I thought it was an anagram inside dirty stuff, but I had muck for the dirty stuff. I've now got it and found my last 5d.

Some on this forum have suggested that 5d is one of the eight down themed clues, but I've found eight without using 5d itself.

Thanks to everybody for all your help .

I'd be interrested to know which one we've missed. I have 2, 3, 4, 12, 16, 19 and 22.
